The industry confidence indicator in the Euro Area fell to -9.5 in February 2024, the lowest in six months, compared to an upwardly revised -9.3 in January and market forecasts of -9.2. Stocks of finished products were increasingly assessed as too large/above normal, indicating lower demand, while managers’ production expectations improved. Managers’ assessment of the current level of overall order books remained broadly stable. Meanwhile, managers’ assessment of developments in production over the past 3 months improved markedly, while their assessment of export order books deteriorated.

The industry confidence indicator in the Euro Area rose to -9.4 in January 2024, up from a revised -9.6 in December but fell short of the market consensus of -9. The stocks of finished products were increasingly assessed as too small or below normal, indicating higher demand, and assessments of the current level of overall order books improved, while production expectations deteriorated. Of the questions not entering the confidence indicator, managers' assessment of developments in past production remained broadly stable, while their assessment of export order books improved.
