Brazil Unemployment Rate Rises Less than Expected
Brazil’s unemployment rate averaged 7.6% in the three months leading to January of 2024, rebounding from the near nine-year low of 7.4% in the previous three-month period, but below market expectations of a 7.8% rate. Despite the increase, the result continued to point to a relatively tight labor market in the Brazilian economy, when compared to levels post-2015 economic crisis. Compared to the previous moving quarter, the unemployment rate remained unchanged. The number of unemployed individuals fell by 703 thousand from the October 2023 moving quarter to 8.3 million, while the number of net employment rose by 387 thousand to 100.6 million. In the meantime, average wages rose by R$47 to R$ 3,078.

Brazil Jobless Rate Nears 9-Year Low
Brazil's unemployment rate dropped further to 7.4% in the fourth quarter of 2023, down from 7.7% in the previous three-month period, falling short of the market expectation of 7.6%. This marked the lowest rate since the three months through February 2015, as the number of unemployed individuals dropped by 234 thousand to 8.082 million, and the number of employed individuals surged by 1.146 million, reaching an all-time high of 100.985 million. The employment rate rose to 57.6% from the third quarter's 57.1% and the activity rate increased to 62.2% from 61.8%.
